Health Matters in the CommunityPiedmont Athens Regional offers several classes and programs to help your health. To register, use the links below or search our online calendar.

Senior Adult Programs

Programs focus on health issues and illness/condition management for the older adult.

Arthritis Foundation Aquatic Program: This program, held in Piedmont Athens Regional Rehabilitation's therapeutic pool, is intended for relieving arthritis pain and stiffness. Water supports and lessens stress on joints to encourage free movement, and provides mild resistance to help build muscle strength.

Community Programs

Programs focus on helping individuals live healthier lives.

The American Heart Association Heartsaver course covers CPR for adults, children and infants. You'll receive a two-year certification card at the end of the course.

This four-session program is designed to help you stop using tobacco products for good.

The National Safety Council Basic First Aid class offers you a three-year certification.

Get A Handle on Your Hunger
Become more aware of "hunger" triggered by stress, emotions and external cues. Practice dealing with your cravings in a positive way without food. Learn basic healthy eating strategies and have your nutrition questions answered during a session with a Registered Dietitian. Changing eating habits can assist with weight loss, but weight loss is not the focus of this class. There will be no "weigh-ins."

The goal of our free Health Matters for Families program is to provide wellness guidance for children identified as being at-risk for childhood obesity.

In this four-session class you'll learn what high blood pressure is, how it can affect your body and how to set goals for healthy habits that can help lower your blood pressure.

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Class - FREE
2nd Friday --  5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Griffin-DuBose Healing Lodge
Learn ways to reduce stress, lessen physical and emotional pain, and cope better with everyday demands. Mindfulness is a way of paying attention, of being present in every moment in your life. Research has shown mindfulness meditation to be helpful with many health conditions. It is thought to reconnect the body, mind, and emotions in a conscious and compassionate manner. Led by Mike Healy, Ed.D.

NEW! Super Sitter Class
For 12 to 15 year olds interested in learning about babysitting as a business, child behavior, first aid and safety. $25 per participant.

Parent-Child Programs

We offer a variety of classes to support our Women and Children Services. 

Baby & Child CPR
This class covers CPR and conscious and unconscious choking for infants (up to age one) and children (up to age eight). This course does not offer certification.

Baby Care Basics
This class covers newborn care tasks including: bathing, diapering, dressing, swaddling, feeding, burping, soothing, and caring for the umbilical cord and circumcision.

Big Kids & Babies
Class for children who will be a big brother or sister. It includes what to expect and a brief tour of the Mother-Baby Unit.

Birth Basics
This class covers the basics of what to expect during labor and birth and is designed to help you plan for a memorable experience.

Breastfeeding Basics
This class covers the benefits of breastfeeding, preparing to breastfeed, how to get started, how to position and latch the baby, how to tell if baby is getting enough to eat, and how to establish a breastfeeding routine the first few weeks at home.

Childbirth Preparation
These classes cover preparation for labor and birth including stages and phases of labor, relaxation and breathing, comfort measures and interventions such as medications for pain relief, epidurals, induction and Cesarean delivery.
