The extern program is available to junior level nursing students who have completed one year, to include clinicals, in an accredited nursing program.

Athens Regional's externships are professional development experiences in which students:

  • learn to organize, prioritize and coordinate patient care
  • assess patients
  • document, initiate, review and revise patient care plans
  • educate patients and families
  • learn how to effective communicate with patient care teams
  • learn professional nursing behaviors

Each student works with a preceptor who directly supervises clinical experiences. Additional educational sessions and training sessions are offered throughout the summer.
