I-123 Thyroid Scan
The I-123 Thyroid Scan is a functional evaluation of the thyroid that provides images of size and shape as well as function data from the uptake, which is the percentage of iodine absorbed by the thyroid over time.
You cannot eat or drink from midnight the night before your exam until you have your procedure. After arriving in the Nuclear Medicine department, you will be asked to take pills containing the medicine.
You will be asked to return six hours later to have your scan, which will take about one hour. You will need to return the next day for a 24-hour scan, which should take about 15 minutes.
