Mobile Mammography Unit FAQ

How much does it cost?
There is not an additional charge for the Mobile Mammography Unit to come to your facility. We only charge for the mammograms we provide.

Who is eligible for a screening on the Mobile Mammography Unit?

  • Women age 40 or older.
  • Women between the ages of 35-40 with a family history of breast cancer. (Mother, sister or daughter.)
  • You cannot be pregnant or nursing (for the last 9 months).
  • Women cannot have any breast symptoms, such as a lump, drainage or breast pain.
  • Women who've seen a referring physician and had a clinical breast exam within one year.
  • Women who have not had a mammogram within the past 12 months or 365 days (unless otherwise approved through insurance company).

What should I expect?
A registered female technologist performs the exam. The films are sent to the Athens Regional Breast Health Center to be reviewed by center radiologists. A report will be sent to your designated physician. You will also receive a letter concerning your results.

How should I prepare?
On the day of the exam, we recommend wearing a blouse, sweater or other two-piece outfit because you will be asked to remove your clothing from the waist up. Do not wear deodorant or body powder.

How long does it take?
The complete process takes about 30 minutes. Approximately 20 mammograms a day can be performed on our Mobile Mammography Unit.

Where will the Mobile Mammography Unit be next for appointments?
The mobile unit visits each of our Regional FirstCare locations on a routine basis.
