Aquatic Therapy

Athens Regional Rehabilitation Aquatic Therapy PoolAquatic therapy is outpatient rehabilitation performed in a heated pool. The properties of water - buoyancy, hydrostatic pressure and viscosity, plus the warmth of a therapeutic pool - provide the perfect location for rehabilitation exercises.

The warmth of the pool water reduces muscular tension and helps increase restricted joint movement. The buoyancy of the water reduces body weight which decreases compressive forces on the joints. Vigorous activity can be performed with very little or no impact. Injured limbs are supported in water, which allows greater ease of movement without increase in pain.

The supportive, resistive and assistive qualities of water make it possible for patients to begin range of motion, strength and endurance exercises within hours or days of injury. Aquatic therapy is available for all post-surgical patients after a physician's clearance.
