Complementary Cancer Therapy

The Loran Smith Center for Cancer Support at Athens Regional offers many free workshops and classes that serve as complementary therapy for cancer patients and survivors.

These therapies help patients, families and caregivers through diagnosis, treatment, survivorship and bereavement. They are all held at the Loran Smith Center for Cancer Support or the Griffin-DuBose Healing Lodge, unless noted.

Workshops and Relaxation Techniques 

Art Therapy
These workshops use different media forms to offer you a way to safely release emotions and to communicate feelings that are difficult to put into words. They also promote relaxation, enjoyment and quality of life.

Look Good ... Feel Better
An American Cancer Society makeup, skin care, hair care program for women going through chemotherapy or radiation treatment or who've completed treatment.

Stress Busters: Mind/Body Connection for Resiliency
Learn new methods of relaxation and renewal for your mind and body.

Healing Touch
By appointment
Healing Touch promotes relaxation, reduces stress and increases energy by using techniques that influence the energy system of the body through touch.

Reiki (“ray-kee”)
By appointments
The word "reiki" is Japanese and refers to life-energy. Reiki is a form of healing touch used for reducing stress and increasing energy.

Healing Grief Workshop
A nine-week workshop for those suffering from the loss of a loved one. The loss does not have to be a cancer-related death. Topics include accepting role changes and grief anniversaries.

Yoga and Tai Chi

Using a combination of movements, breathing techniques and deep relaxation, yoga will help you:

  • Reduce stress and anxiety
  • Combat depression and promote healing
  • Strengthen pelvic muscles
  • Improve sleep and the ability to relax
  • Help minimize side effects of treatment

Yoga for Hope, Peace & Cancer Recovery
Thursdays: 10 a.m. to noon
This yoga class offers people with cancer gentle movements in a nurturing environment.

Yoga for Breast Cancer Survivors
Mondays: 5 to 7 p.m.
This yoga class offers breast cancer survivors relaxation and rejuvenation through awareness, breath and movement.

Yoga for Men
Tuesdays: 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
This class is designed for men with any cancer diagnosis, and can be used before, during or after treatment.

Tai Chi / Qi Gong
Work on self-healing through the use of breath and gentle, easy movement.
