Clinical Driving Evaluations

Piedmont Athens Regional Rehabilitation's Clinical Driving Evaluations provide you with information about pre-driving skills and possible areas of safety concern. We communicate with the driving program team: your doctor, clinical staff, on-the-road staff and you.

The driving evaluation program is designed for experienced drivers who've had a change in health and need to determine if they can safely return to driving. Health changes may include:

  • Stroke
  • Brain injury
  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
  • Parkinson's
  • Amputation
  • Vision loss
  • Orthopedic injuries
  • Overall age-related changes in physical and/or cognitive status.

If you have concerns about driving safely or notice signs in a loved one, consider a clinical driving assessment.

Clinical Driving Assessment

A driving evaluation consists of a clinical assessment of pre-driving skills that include:

  • Strength
  • Coordination
  • Brake reaction time
  • Visual acuity
  • Visual perceptual skills
  • Memory
  • Sequencing

Once the clinical assessment is successfully completed, an behind-the-wheel assessment of driving skills is recommended. Piedmont Athens Regional Rehabilitation has arranged for an Occupational Therapist, who is a Certified Driver Trainer, to provide this service in Athens. We also offer a list of facilities that provide this service in the surrounding area.

Drivers who do not pass the clinical assessment may be given a home program or treatment to improve skills.
